Do I need a reservation?
Yes, we take reservations for all guests. Please note that payment is due at the time of reservation to secure your spot(s).
What are your hours?
Our shuttle runs on Saturdays from 11am-1pm & Sundays 12pm-2pm. We are glad to coordinate trips for groups of 10 or more on week days. Tubing trips on the river takes an average of 3 hours & may fluctuate depending on water level.
How does the trip work?
The process is simple. Make a reservation for your party. *Arrive 30 minutes early & you will be checked in from your car & directed to the parking area. You will board the shuttle and receive brief instructions while we depart to take you upstream to the starting point. Then you will begin your river adventure. The trip is 3 miles on the river & takes an 2 – 3 hrs, depending on conditions. Your car will be waiting for you at the end of the trip – at the exit point right before the bridge on Hwy 127. You can’t miss the signs. They will direct you right to the parking area.
During your trip, expect to navigate around rocks and trees in some areas, and sit back and relax in others. You will encounter downed trees – this is a natural part of any river & happens frequently during storms. Most of the time, the water will naturally flow around them, if you stay in the current. It is possible that you may need to move off your tube to pass through some areas. Please understand that this is the great outdoors and the Jacob Fork is not entirely a “lazy river” like some other tubing experiences. You’re in for an awesome tubing adventure!
Be sure you are comfortable with these conditions before you book your reservation.
*Very important – The shuttle will run promptly so arrive in plenty of time to be ready to load.
What about bad weather?
All adventures go rain or shine unless the weather is deemed to be unsafe. We will post weather updates on our Facebook page & contact you as soon as possible, if cancellation is necessary. Call us if you have any questions or concerns. In the unfortunate event that weather forces us to cancel, we will reschedule your trip.
If it starts raining during your trip, continue down the river. If it unexpectedly starts thundering or lightning, retreat to the river bank, and stay in your tube. Generally, storms pass through quickly. Once the thunder/lightning stops, continue your trip. Safety is of our utmost concern.
What all is included?
Note: Your ticket is based on a 2-3 hour trip. Please note that property is privately owned along the river. Please do not stop & loiter for extended periods during your trip. We ask that you return your gear as soon as your trip is completed.
Where do I park?
You will check in and park at 4625 S NC 127 Hwy, Hickory, NC, 28602. We will shuttle you upstream to the starting point. You will then take an adventurous trip downstream back to our location where your car will be waiting.
Is there a minimum age for children?
Children need to be at least 40 lbs to tube. We provide life vests and they are required for all children 12 & under. All minors (under age 18) are required to be accompanied by an adult and a waiver must be signed by a parent or LEGAL guardian for a minor to participate.
Please note that the Jacob Fork River is not entirely a “lazy river.” While there are many periods of calm water, there are several small rapids and rocks and trees to navigate around in some places. This is what makes our tubing experience “adventurous.” We encourage you to read all the info on the website and decide what your comfort level is for your child. If you are not confident, we recommend trying the trip alone and then you can make a more informed decision regarding children.
What should I wear?
Footwear is absolutely essential (water shoes, sandals with a strap, old sneakers, etc.).
You will encounter large rocks and sharp objects are a possibility on the river bottom. Please note that there may be times you will be required to walk short distances, due to shallow water.
Do you have lockers?
No. Your vehicle is your locker. We will keep your keys for you in a safe, dry, secure place.
How deep is the water?
Water depth varies from one spot to the next. In most places, it is about knee to waist deep on an adult, but in others, it may be over your head. Life vests are provided for your safety.
How long is the trip?
The trip is approximately 3 miles on the river and generally takes 2 – 3 hours to complete.
Trip times can vary based on water level and weather conditions. Our trips are designed for this time frame & please note, it is not all day ticket. Reservations are booked with the 3 hour turnaround in mind.
Please note that property is privately owned along the river. Please do not stop & loiter for extended periods during your trip.
Return your gear as soon as your trip is complete.
Can I bring a large group?
Yes! We are willing to coordinate reservations for larger groups including weekdays. Call us ahead of time for special arrangements for large groups (churches, school or corporate groups, etc.). We’ll do our best to accommodate you!
All minors (under age 18) are required to be accompanied by an adult and a waiver must be signed by a parent or LEGAL guardian.
Note: You must use one form of payment for the entire group.
Anything I shouldn’t bring?
Please do not bring anything to take on the river that you don’t want to get wet or do not wish to lose. If you drop something in the river, it’s probably gone forever. Please take this advice seriously. There have been many things lost in the river so far this year: wallets, phones, keys, glasses, sunglasses, etc.
We cannot be responsible for any items lost or damaged that you decide to bring on the river. Lock your personal belongings in your car and we will keep your keys securely for you during your trip.
Can I bring a cooler?
Yes, if you want to bring a cooler (up to 36 qt.), we have cooler tubes available for rent for $10.
Please note that all local laws must be followed & you must act responsibly. Keep in mind that our tubing trip is adventurous; it requires a clear mind and agility to navigate through the rocks and trees. Never put yourself at risk on water.
Please remember that glass containers are strictly prohibited and littering is illegal. We ask that you please hold on to your trash and dispose of it properly, upon your return. Let’s keep our river clean for everyone to enjoy!
Am I responsible for rental equipment?
Yes. You are responsible for returning your tubes and life vests in good condition. You must hold on to your tube at all times. Our tubes are heavy duty and designed for river tubing. You will encounter rocks along the way & may get stuck in some places, depending on water level. If this happens, we recommend that you move off the tube, reposition it for floating, and then get back on. Do not scoot to attempt to get dislodged. You may cause your tube to tear & deflate. Damages to tubes are your responsibility.
Can I bring my dog?
Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on the tubing trip.
Will I see any wildlife?
Yes, you may! This is an another exciting part of your adventure. You may see birds, fish, deer, raccoon, beaver, turtle, or other wildlife. Share with us what you encounter along the trip!
Is this a "lazy river" tubing experience?
While there is plenty of calm relaxing water during your tubing trip, Jacob Fork is not entirely a lazy river. There are large rocks and various trees to navigate around – this is a natural part of any river. In several areas, you will encounter mild rapids – this is part of what makes this tubing experience adventurous! It’s not scary – just adventurous enough to be a lot of fun! If you enjoy the outdoors, we think you will love it!
Can I bring my own tube?
Unfortunately, our insurance doesn’t allow us to transport outside equipment at this time. Our ticket includes rental of a heavy gauge tube designed especially for river tubing, shuttle service, life vest, & parking.
Do you offer shuttle service only for kayakers?
Sorry, our insurance company does not allow us to transport outside equipment at this time.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations must be made 48 hours in advance. We will gladly reschedule your reservation, if at all possible. Keep in mind that you should book with a firm number of guest spots in mind when you make your reservation. We do not refund for no shows because we lose the opportunity to sell that ticket to someone else.
Is this a family friendly activity?
There is nothing like a family adventure to create lasting memories. At JFOC, we are siblings, parents, and grandparents, and we value the opportunity for fun filled family adventures and a family environment.
